October 22 Sea day #4

As of this morning, Anthem has travelled 1,945 nautical miles, over 250 nm overnight. It was another roiling night in the Atlantic Ocean. People with seasickness only had the visit to Ponta Delgada as a reprieve.  Today was Sea Day #4. The morning coordinates were 38°48.49’ N and 21°32.92’ W on course 289° (WNW) to Halifax, Canada. The 70 km/hr wind still howled, the sun was shining above the line of white clouds and the temperature was 18° C. The ocean waves were only about three or four meters high. It was the wind that was causing all access to outside to be cordoned off and the outdoor pool to be drained again. You have to walk with intention whether on stairs or moving around the ship. You never know if your next step will be further to the side or that you are taking a bigger step forward than planned.

The ship’s clocks had been moved back one hour early this morning. We ate breakfast in American Icon and spoke to Sivakumar, our dining room waiter on the Canary Islands cruise. We spent part of the morning seated near the Internet hot spot as Larry uploaded the photos from yesterday, which took a little over one minute per photo to load. We had our coffees from the Diamond Club. We watched people walking to the Two70° café or theatre. Claire was reading an eBook Intrepid’s Last Case  written in 1983 which has grave concerns about the then Soviet Union and its espionage activities to infiltrate the West. It is eerily reminiscent of today’s world political situation.

We completed the Canadian Declaration Card for Canada Border Services Agency for the arrival of Anthem in Halifax in three days. Everyone on the ship must complete the form and submit it to Guest Services, by tomorrow evening, who will review the card to be sure nothing was missed. They will submit the forms to the Canada Border Services Agency for the ship’s arrival in Canada. Between us we have purchased less than $50 Canadian.  If we do not buy anything in Boston or New Jersey, we will be able to use the Nothing To Declare  line at Toronto airport next Saturday.

Our stateroom attendant, Carlos, was able to enter our stateroom for the first time this voyage. He was instructed to thoroughly sanitizer it, so we gathered up our toiletry cases, papers and electronic devises clearing all surfaces to be cleaned. Carlos was not allowed to enter our stateroom during Claire’s quarantine.

Lunch was in the Solarium Café. Because of the wind and the low temperature of 21° C, there were some empty lounge chairs around the outdoor pool, the indoor pools and the Solarium pool. There were many occupied loungers even though the outdoor pool had been drained, but there is a huge movie screen on one side of the pool that plays movies during the day.

The waves seemed to be under two meters but the wind was still strong. Captain Iv’s midday report said that the waves would decrease to about two meters later this afternoon and there was a 1.5° list to the ship due to the wind, nothing to worry about. To be in danger of tipping the list needs to be over 30° and that is unlikely since the underwater stabilizers at the front of the ship are extended helping to keep the ship from rocking even more than now.

After lunch we looked at Saturday’s paper, then went for a milkshake at Johnny Rocket’s. The milkshake qualifies as a Diamond drink.

The dress code for dinner was casual. The maître d’ reminded us that clocks go back an hour overnight again. Larry and Claire were able to dance for part of the 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. pre-recorded ballroom dance music.  The Rhumbas were way too slow. It was the same quartet for dinner, Jenny, Melvin, Larry and Claire, at our table for 6. The shows tonight are the full cast production of The Gift which we skipped and a 70s Disco Inferno Show at 10:30 p.m.  Carlos created an elephant from towels to greet us.

So far they have not figured out that Claire is out of quarantine and have not cancelled the free Wi-Fi so posts should continue.

Total steps 9,976
